Previous Student work - A Review - The Badger In I

Hola,

I certainly believe that there is a badger in all of us, trying to claw it's way out, chewing through our chests, out into the open world.
No? Just me? Okay then...

Well, this song may put things into perspective for you, it spoke to me on a deep, personal level, and I will remember it forever.

Theory 3 - Laura Mulvey

Hello again!

Here's the final theory presentation to do with theory. These presentations will be referred back to over the course of my blog, and provides the foundation of analysis with my research as well as the fundamental principles within music videos which I hope to implement within my own music video. Doesn't that sound fun?

Without further adieu, here is the presentation:

Theory 2 - Carol Vernallis

Hi,

I made yet another Prezi, this time talking about Carol Vernallis' theory on music videos

Here you go:

Theory 1 - Andrew Goodwin

Hello,

I made a Prezi explaining Andrew Goodwin's theory on music videos

Enjoy

What is a music video, and what is its purpose?

Hi,

Here's a presentation I made discussing what the function of a music video is:

Enjoy!

Summer Work

Hi, I'm Jack!

Hello, fellow music video enthusiast!

I'm a guy called Jack, and music is big part of me, without it, I would probably be even more boring than I already am..

I'm very happy in this picture, as you can tell..

Here's my Weebly site for a band I really like, called Periphery:

Mainstream vs Indie

Mainstream vs Indie

You are going to carry out some research into the differences between mainstream and independently signed artists.  One Direction, as a manufactured pop group, has a large ‘machine’ behind them which can bring both advantages and disadvantages.  Lanterns on the Lake, who are signed to an independent label, do not have this machine.   Find out as much as you can about both bands, covering the list below, and then answer the questions at the bottom:

·         Find out everything you can about who owns the record label they are signed to.
·         Find out the other sorts of artists/genres that the label specialises in.
·         Find out who the target audience is for both bands.
·         Make a list of the different sorts of merchandise/ancillary products that are endorsed by the artist or available for fans of the bands.
·         Explore the website and find out how you can purchase the music.
·         Find out what you can about the backstory of how the bands became famous.

One Direction’s label is Columbia Records, which is owned by Sony Music Entertainment. This was founded in 1887. It was bought out by Sony Music Entertainment in 1988. The artists signed to Columbia Records currently include Adele, A R Rahman, Barbra Streisand, Beyoncé, Bring Me The Horizon, Bruce Springsteen, Calvin Harris, Céline Dion, Daft Punk, Earl Sweatshirt, Electric Light Orchestra led by frontman Jeff Lynne, Ella Henderson, James Arthur, J. Cole, Juicy J, Little Mix, Madeon, MKTO, One Direction, Passion Pit, Pharrell Williams, Rachel Platten, Rita Ora, the Neighbourhood, The Script, T.I., Train, and the casts of Fox's hit television shows Glee and Empire. The target audience for One Direction is teenage girls. Fans can purchase clothing, tour merchandise, accessorises, toys, books, posters, DVDs, and the albums from the One Direction store. The band members were originally contestants on X-factor, they did not win, but they were noticed by multiple record companies.

Lanterns on the Lake’s label is Bella Union. They are an independent record label founded by Simon Raymonde and Robin Guthrie of Cocteau Twins in 1997, now run solely by Raymonde. The label has released music by Beach House, Department of Eagles, Lone Wolf, Our Broken Garden, Fleet Foxes, The Acorn, Abe Vigoda, J. Tillman, Peter Broderick, The Kissaway Trail, Pearly Gate Music, John Grant, Lawrence Arabia, The Low Anthem, Hannah Cohen, Laura Veirs and Mountain Man. The target audience for the band is people in their late teens. Their merchandise includes CDs, posters, T-shirts, bags and vinyl. You can purchase their music from their website. They released EPs from 2007-2010 and were then noticed by Bella Union and was then signed by them.

Questions:
·         What do you think are the main advantages and disadvantages to being signed to an independent label? Advantages: Artists get the rights to their music; they sign you because they love your music. Disadvantages: Lack of funds, disorganization.
·         What do you think are the main advantages and disadvantages to being signed to a mainstream label? Advantages: excessive amounts of funding, size and reputation. Disadvantages: Must fight for attention, artist unfriendly deals.
·         How important do you think merchandise and ancillary products are to the success of the band and to the audiences? The only two important items that contribute to the success of a band is CD sales and ticket sales to their concerts, as it shows the label how many people are listening to their music.
·         How many different ways can fans of the bands find out information about them? Internet, Radio, TV and magazines.
·         Would you rather be signed to a mainstream or independent label?  Explain why, with reference to your research.  Independent, as I would signed to a company that would sign me as they are more interested in the music that I am making, rather than how much money I could make them.

I am Timothy Martini, the one who can't decide what colour his hair should be.

Target Audience Research Task

Analysis of previous student work

A2 Media Studies – Advanced Portfolio

Blogging task

Select one of the previous student videos that you’ve analysed in class – try and pick one from the same genre that you would like to work within.  Analyse it in relation to Andrew Goodwin, Carol Vernallis and Laura Mulvey’s theories, and identify what you feel are the video’s main strengths and weaknesses.

Emmanuel, Ariadna, Yuksel, Titilope, Joshua
 One of the multiple baselines

The video is about how the singers are mourning the loss of his brother. The video is an illustration as it shows how the singers are dealing with the loss of their brother. The video has multiple jump cuts throughout the whole video, as well as having multiple baselines for the editor to jump back to. The singers are also used as the character of the video which is normally seen in the genre. The video lasts around 3 minutes which is the standard for music videos.

Analysis of costume, setting and location in music video genres

Pick three music videos – each from a different genre – and focus on the use of setting, costumes and props.  Make notes using the grid below and post your analysis to your blog along with the embedded videos.

Video 1: Slipknot – The Devil in I
Video 2: Disturbed – The Vengeful One
Video 3: Ninja Sex Party – Unicorn Wizard
Use of costume
Record how many costume changes there are in the video.
How does the use of costume link to the verse-chorus-verse structure?
Examine how the costumes link to the lyrics, setting and location.
How does the use of costume link to this genre?  Is it typical?
There are 2 costume changes throughout the whole video.
The entire band members are wearing boiler-suits as that is their trademark look. The boiler-suits are dark and dank in order to reflect on the location that they are in.
The protagonist is dressed in a destroyed black robe and with chain wrapped around it. This is to represent how the heavy metal fan-base, as the antagonists dress up in suits and ties.
There are 3 costume changes for the lead main singer in the video. The costume changes in the chorus and then changes back to how it looks in the first verse. The costumes are not very typical with this genre (comedy) as the costumes can change for each comedy band/singer.
Use of setting and location
How many different locations does the video contain?
How does the setting and location link to the costume?
Are well-known locations used?
How does the use of setting and location link to the genre?  Are they typical?
The video is set in a warehouse, which makes it an internal location. The location dark and dank which reflects the heavy tones that the genre (heavy metal) tries to create.
The video is set in an apocalyptic version of earth. It is done to represent how the media tries to makes the world live in fear of war.
There are 8 different locations in the video but most of them are in front of a green-screen. The locations and settings are outlandish like the lead character’s costume.

Video 1:
Video 2:
Video 3:
Use of props
Does the video contain any specific of typical props of this genre?
How do the props link with the lyrics/locations in the video?
The props that are used are items that “kill” the band members. This reflects the dark tones of metal as the band members are killed in violent ways.
The props that are used that the weapons that the protagonist uses to fight against the antagonists.
The video contains a lot of over-the-top props, which is normally seen in the comedy genre.

Questions

1.    What do you notice about the amount of costumes used in the videos?  They seem to change more in the comedy ones, as they make more over-the-top ones as the video goes on.
2.    What differences are there between the genres in terms of the amount and style of the costumes? In the first 2 videos, the style of costume is more dark and serious, whereas in the third video they are more over-the-top as they reflect what they’re genres’ sound like.
3.    Compare the use of setting and location between the three genres – what similarities and differences can you spot? The locations in the first 2 videos are more dark and serious, whereas the third video’s locations are more bright and crazy to replicate how crazy the song is.
4.    How significant is the use of props in the genres that you analysed? The props were more significant to the third video, as the video was an illustration, it would use all of the props that the lyrics would mention.

Post your answers along with your analysis to your blog.  This is an individual blog post.
